August 2015: Chris Froome vrooms to victory

August 1, 2015

He may not be a South African by birth or nationality, but Chris Froome has carved a place into the hearts of South Africans  across the globe. The Tour de France winner, a British national born in Kenya, Froome spends the bulk of the summer months training on South African roads which he grew acquainted to during his adolescent years living in the country.

Specialising as a climber, he turned professional at the age of 22 riding for team Konica Minolta. He won a bronze medal during in the time trial at the 2012 Olympics, and walked away with his first Tour de France victory riding for Team Sky in 2013. He dedicated this victory to his mother, who died of cancer before his Tour debut in 2008. Froome celebrated his second Tour de France victory on Sunday, 26 July.

Though he’s faced his share of unwarranted public backlash, Froome has held on – not only to his title but also to his wits. With a second Tour de France victory under the belt and a mini Froome on the way, we could not be happier for Chris and wife, Michelle Cound, for a double victory this year.
