South African visa requirements to other popular travel destinations
Visiting the UK
If you are travelling to the UK to visit, you will need a Standard Visitor Visa. This applies whether you are going on holiday or conducting academic research, going on business or to take part in sports, creative events or to get private medical treatment. While you are travelling on the visa you cannot do paid or unpaid work. The earliest you can apply for this visa is 3 months before you travel. This visa usually allows you to stay in the UK for up to 6 months.
Visiting Canada
If you are visiting Canada you will need a temporary resident visa (TRV) to enter Canada for up to 6 months, this is the visa you’d apply for as a normal tourist. The duration of this visa is confirmed by the border services officer when you enter the country. If you are planning on visiting Canada multiple times during this 6-month period – ensure that your visa is a multiple entry visa.
Visiting Australia
If you are visiting Australia on a South African passport, you will need a visitor visa – also known as Subclass 600. This visa allows you to visit Australia for holidays or family visits and certain business activities that you might need to do while visiting. You should apply to the ‘Tourist Stream’ and the visa is usually granted for 3 or 6 months.
Visiting New Zealand
If you are travelling to New Zealand on a South African passport you will need a visa. If you plan to holiday in New Zealand you will need to apply for a visitor visa, which allows you to holiday in New Zealand for up to 9 months.
Visiting the USA
There are many different visas you can apply for if you are visiting the USA, but the main visa if you are visiting is the B1 Visitor Visa, which allows you to stay in the USA for up to 6 months. This visa can be valid for anything from 1 to 10 years.
